Overview

If you've ever navigated a dating app, you're familiar with the cycle: endless swiping, monotonous conversations, and the inevitable ghosting from a potential match. Dating today is unlike any other time, with significant shifts in how we form connections. This project delves into the future of modern dating, examining the role of AI and algorithms in shaping our romantic choices. We aim to uncover how these digital mediators influence the decisions we make and the connections we forge in the evolving landscape of love and relationships.

The Team

My Role

As a Project Manager on the "Modern Dating In The Future" project, I led a team through a five-week endeavor to explore the intersection of modern dating, AI algorithms, and speculative design. Our senior capstone for the Interaction Design program aimed to provoke discussion about the influence of dating app algorithms on user decisions. We combined design research, UX/UI design, and speculative fiction, culminating in prototypes that question algorithmic biases and their effects on dating preferences and behaviors. Our work, grounded in extensive user research and creative design solutions, sought to illuminate the often-unseen impacts of technology on social interactions.

Gantt Chart

The Gantt chart for our "Modern Dating In The Future" project serves as a comprehensive roadmap, detailing the timeline and phases of our work from conception to completion. It outlines our project's milestones, including design research, user testing, and prototype development, offering a visual representation of our team's workflow and deadlines. This chart was instrumental in ensuring timely progress, facilitating effective team collaboration, and managing resources efficiently, thereby guiding us through the complexities of speculative design and user experience exploration in modern dating contexts.

Research

Embarking on our journey to understand the intricate dance between technology and romance, our research phase was foundational. We delved into the behaviors, preferences, and frustrations of dating app users, employing surveys and field studies to gather both qualitative and quantitative insights. This groundwork not only informed our design process but also shaped our critical examination of how AI and algorithms could redefine the future of dating, aiming to provoke meaningful conversations on the digitalization of human connections.

Survey

In our exploration of modern dating dynamics, a survey revealed that 75% of users find it challenging to gauge chemistry through traditional dating app interfaces, underscoring the craving for genuine connection and shared life outlooks.

Competitive Analysis

Our competitive analysis dissected the landscape of existing dating apps, focusing on how they leverage technology to foster connections. We examined their features, user interface, and the integration of AI and algorithms, contrasting their approaches to sparking genuine interaction. This investigation illuminated the prevalent reliance on superficial criteria and the underutilization of features that could potentially deepen connections, such as voice prompts and video interactions. It underscored the opportunity for innovation in creating more meaningful user experiences, guiding us toward a design philosophy that prioritizes authenticity and emotional resonance in digital dating environments.

Subject Matter Expert Interview - Dr.Jess

In our project, we had the invaluable opportunity to interview Dr. Jess, a PhD-certified Sex and Relationship Psychologist. Her insights illuminated the complex interplay between cultural norms and individual desires, emphasizing the need to address systemic issues and problematic messaging within the context of modern dating and technology's role in shaping our perceptions of desirability.

“When we exist in a culture, and we create what is desirable we have to undo the problematic messaging, we have to keep working on these systemic issues.” - Dr. Jess

Field Observations

Our field observations included attending virtual speed-dating events to capture the essence of modern dating beyond the screen. This immersive experience allowed us to directly observe the nuances of first impressions, the dynamics of rapid interaction, and the genuine search for connection outside traditional dating apps. These insights were crucial in understanding the limitations and potential of current digital dating practices, guiding our project toward innovative solutions that could better facilitate meaningful connections in a digital age.

Research Insights

Our research illuminated the profound influence of inherent biases and algorithmic dependency in the realm of digital dating. We aim to encourage users to delve deeper and challenge their preconceptions. By leveraging AI to forecast potential futures with matches, we're curious if this foresight could pivot users' decision-making processes. Could awareness of a predicted future alter how individuals approach dating, urging them to reconsider biases that might otherwise go unchallenged? This exploration stands at the heart of our findings, pushing the boundaries of how technology intersects with human connection.

Users have a bias that they could benefit from having uncovered.
Users ghost each other and the illusion of choice comes into play here.
Users need a more effective method of gauging chemistry.

Solution Matrix

In our journey to bridge the gap between technology and meaningful human connections, we developed a solution matrix flow chart. This strategic tool synthesized our research findings, mapping out potential ideas and pathways for innovation. It served as a catalyst for ideation, enabling us to systematically explore and prioritize solutions based on feasibility, impact, and user needs. This approach ensured our creative process was grounded in data-driven insights, guiding us toward developing features that truly resonate with users and challenge the status quo of digital dating.

AI Predicts Your Future Compatibility

Our "AI Predicts Your Future Love Life" design leverages sophisticated algorithms to offer users a glimpse into their romantic futures with potential matches. This innovative feature is designed to challenge users' decision-making processes in dating by making them aware of how biases affect their choices. By providing predictions about compatibility and future relationship dynamics, it encourages users to reflect deeply on their preferences and potentially reconsider the biases underlying their swiping habits, fostering a more thoughtful and open approach to finding love

AI Points Out Your Type

Our "AI Points Out Your Type" design is an intuitive feature that mirrors back the user's preferences and biases by analyzing their interaction patterns on the platform. It's crafted to blatantly highlight the unconscious biases in choice, aiming to foster self-awareness and encourage broader inclusivity in user preferences. By confronting users with their own patterns, the design seeks to spark reflection and conversation about the influence of biases on dating decisions, potentially broadening the horizons of users' dating landscapes.

Future Considerations

For future considerations, the execution of our AI model will focus on refining its predictive accuracy and ethical application. We plan to enhance its learning algorithms with a diverse dataset to ensure it understands a wide range of user behaviors and preferences without reinforcing stereotypes. Additionally, transparency around how predictions are made will be crucial to build trust with users. We'll explore user feedback loops to continuously improve the AI's recommendations, aiming for a balance between technological innovation and fostering genuine human connections.
